Built as a residence for the Angevin dynasty and originally called Belforte, it was destroyed and rebuilt various times across the centuries. It served as a military fort and prison and now houses the Novecento Museum of Naples, which holds more than 150 works by various artists.
With the help of the audio guide, you'll learn about the historical events that took place within the castle walls. You'll discover that, over the centuries, it has endured numerous sieges!
You'll also get to know its architectural features, like its distinctive six-pointed star-shaped layout —the only of its kind. Once you reach the top, you'll also have incredible scenic views of Mount Vesuvius and the Sorrento Peninsula. Don't forget to take a photo!

The Castelo Sant'Elmo is open from Wednesday to Monday from 9 am to 7 pm.
Temporary Closures
The Novecento Museum of Naples is closed until further notice. It is expected to reopen in 2025.
