Tour Details
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the ruins of the Douglas C-47B Dakota aircraft and start our guided tour of the underground Željava Air Base. Are you ready to dive deep into the history of Croatia?
First, we'll explore the interior of this aircraft, where the echoes of past missions still linger. After seeing the aircraft, we'll head to the runways to imagine what it felt like for pilots flying during the Yugoslav wars.
Built during the '60s, this air base lies in the heart of the Plješevica Mountain, on the border with Bosnia, and was designed to withstand nuclear attacks. Did you know that this was the largest underground air and military base in the former Yugoslavia and one of the oldest in Europe?
During our tour, we'll explore the tunnels, which stretch approximately 1.8 miles (3 kilometers), to get a sense of what life was like at the base during its operational days as a refuge until its destruction.
Two and a half hours later, we'll conclude the activity at the starting point.
