The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar is one of the most iconic temples in Spain and a significant center of Christian pilgrimage. Located on the banks of the Ebro River, this architectural gem is a must-visit landmark in Zaragoza.

A Bit of History

Built between the 17th and 18th centuries, this place of worship was erected to honor the Virgin of the Pillar, whose veneration, according to tradition, began after her apparition to the Apostle James in 40 A.D.

The temple was designed by Felipe Sánchez and Francisco Herrera and later expanded. Among its unique features, you can notice a clear Arabic inspiration in some architectural details, such as the exterior domes.

What to See in the Basilica of the Pillar

The Basilica is a beautiful blend of Baroque and Neoclassical styles, with touches of Mudéjar art adding a unique charm. Inside, you’ll find stunning frescoes painted by Francisco de Goya on the domes, an impressive main altar sculpted by Damián Forment, and the Holy Chapel, which holds the beloved column of the Virgin of the Pillar!

The Bombing of the Basilica of the Pillar

During the Spanish Civil War, several bombs fell on the basilica, but none exploded, an event considered a true miracle. Although some historians have suggested that these projectiles were intentionally deactivated before being dropped, two of these bombs are still preserved inside the temple.
