Description
Located on the coast, just 75 kilometres (46 miles) from York, the impressive ruins of Whitby Abbey astonish visitors and tell the story of an extensive history of more than 1,000 years.
Despite invasions, robberies, bombings, and abandonment by Henry VIII in the 16th century, the skeleton of this Benedictine abbey has amazingly remained largely intact.
The abbey, perched on a hilltop with wonderful views of the North Sea, has long served as a reference point for sailors sighting land. It's also said to have served as inspiration for Bram Stoker's novel Dracula! These are just a couple of the amazing curiosities which you can read about on the information boards in the visitor's centre.
