Clifford's Tower Ticket
A visit to Clifford's Tower will take you on a journey back in time. Built during the reign of King Henry III, this place has existed as both a royal mint and a medieval fortress. Did you know that it's the largest surviving part of York Castle?
During your visit to Clifford's Tower, you'll discover an important part of York's history. Throughout the 14th and 15th centuries, the tower was used as a treasury, prison and seat of royal power.
In 1684 the tower was reduced to ashes after a fire in which most of the castle buildings were burnt down. It was rebuilt shortly afterwards and later housed a new prison and court during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was in this way that Clifford's Tower was left as the main surviving element of York Castle.
Today, you can visit the roof deck of Clifford's Tower, which offers fantastic views of the historic centre of York, its medieval buildings and the Cathedral.
