On this Brontë Sisters tour, we'll travel through the bucolic landscapes of the Lake District that inspired Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.
Brontë Sisters Tour
We'll meet at 9 am at Station Precinct and leave Windermere behind to enter Brontë Country, the area where the literary giants grew up and took inspiration from. Book lovers, you're in luck!
First, we'll tour the landscapes of the Lake District National Park, considered one of the most beautiful in the United Kingdom and a source of inspiration for the novels of Emily, Charlotte, and Anne Brontë. We'll stop in the village of Cowan Bridge, where our protagonists lived in the Clergy Daughter's School, a time that marked them for life.
From here, we'll travel through the county of Lancashire following in the footsteps of Charlotte Brontë until we reach the village of Wycoller, the inspiration for Ferndean Manor in the novel Jane Eyre. We'll enjoy the rustic atmosphere of the village while crossing its bridges and visiting its Gothic and Romanesque ruins.
Then, we'll continue learning about the history of the writers in Ponden Hall, a place that served Emily Brontë as inspiration for Thrushcross Grange, home of the family of Wuthering Heights. However, some say the place is a far cry from the book and actually resembles more the farm described in Anne Brontë's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. See it for yourself and weigh in on the debate!
The next stop will take us to Haworth, where we'll see the parsonage where the Brontë family lived. This charming village pays tribute to the writers in every corner! We'll enter the Brontë Parsonage Museum, which houses the largest collection of personal belongings of the sisters, such as furniture, dresses, and books.
On the final leg of the tour, we'll visit the family cemetery, where all but Anne are buried, the Black Bull Inn, and the church where their father served as parson for over 40 years. You'll become an expert on their lives!
Finally, we'll return to Windermere and end the tour at 5:30 pm.
