Spend the day visiting one of Chile's main Humboldt penguin colonies on our unforgettable excursion to Cachagua Island. We'll set off from Viña del Mar and see these incredible animals up close.
Cachagua Island Penguin Watching
At 9 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Viña del Mar and set off northbound. We'll hit the road that runs parallel to the Pacific Ocean as we pass through Reñaca, Concón and the mouth of the Aconcagua River.
Our route will end in Zapallar, a beautiful coastal town where we'll board a fishermen's boat and set sail. The boat will take us to Cachagua Island, an untouched islet that's home to one of the most important colonies of Humboldt penguins on the Chilean coast.
During this 1-hour trip, we'll see the pelicans, seagulls and ducks that live on this island as well as the friendly penguins. This ecosystem is incredibly biodiverse, as it serves as a habitat for dozens of seabirds.
The boat trip will end at Zapallar dock. From there, we'll make our way to a local empanada bar so you can try this Chilean delicacy. This snack will be accompanied by a drink of your choice, which will be a soft drink or mineral water.
After our snack, we'll return to your hotel in Viña del Mar and drop you off at 3 pm.
Animal Sightings
Cachagua Island is one of the best places on the Chilean coast for spotting Humboldt penguins. However, animals are unpredictable. The sighting of a greater or lesser number of penguins depends on various factors. These range from the weather at the time to the breeding and rearing seasons of the different species.
