On this guided tour of Villafranca del Bierzo, we'll discover the great monumental heritage linked to the Jacobean Route of this town, known as the "Little Santiago de Compostela".
Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Castle of the Marqueses to begin this guided tour of Villafranca del Bierzo. We'll discover all its history, as we admire its facade.
Then, we'll head to the Church of Santiago. As we'll see, the church's "door of Forgiveness" is the impressive focal point of the church. The door only opens in Jacobean years to offer the Jubilee to pilgrims who can't go to Compostela due to health reasons.
The Camino de Santiago is closely linked to Villafranca. In fact, we'll walk through this beautiful town of Leon, which was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1965, following the Jacobean Route that the pilgrims follow.
We'll stop in front of the imposing castle-palace of the Marquises of Villafranca, and then we'll follow the walk to the Calle del Agua. This street, one of the most beautiful in the town, is full of historic buildings. Among them is the birthplace of the writer Enrique Gil y Carrasco and the palace of the inquisitor Torquemada.
The tour will then continue towards the collegiate church of Santa Maria, which was erected in the 16th century on an ancient Benedictine monastery of the 12th century. This church is another of the essential monuments of the Camino de Santiago.
Finally, after a tour of 2 hours and 15 minutes, we'll say our goodbyes at the collegiate church.
