Day Trip to the Cuesta de Miranda + La Mexicana Mine
Description
We'll pick you up from your hotel in Villa Unión at the scheduled time, and our journey will begin in an offroading vehicle, traveling along the iconic National Route 40.
This magnificent road, stretching from the south to the north of western Argentina, will lead us to the winding Cuesta de Miranda, one of the most captivating sections of Route 40. Along the way, we'll make several stops to admire the surrounding sierras from various viewpoints. After soaking in the breathtaking views, we'll continue our drive to Famatina, where you'll have the opportunity to enjoy lunch on your own.
Once we've re-energized, our offroading adventure will continue along a mountain road that takes us to the Sierra de Famatina. Here, we'll admire the dazzling landscapes of the Pesebre and Ocre canyons. The latter is named for its distinctive yellowish hue, which stands out in the vastness of the landscape.
Our next stop will be at an impressive altitude of 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) above sea level, where we'll find the La Mexicana Mine. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this mine stood as one of the primary centers for gold and silver mining in the province of La Rioja.
During our visit to this historic mining site, you'll gain insights into the methods used to extract precious metals. Additionally, you'll learn about the history of the cable car system that was once responsible for transporting gold and silver to the town of Chilecito.
After exploring the La Mexicana Mine, we'll make our way back to your Villa Unión hotel, with an estimated arrival time of 12 hours following our initial pick-up.
