Guided Walking Tour of Vila Viçosa
Guided Walking Tour of Vila Viçosa
At the scheduled time, we'll meet on Avenida Duques de Bragança where our guided walking tour will begin. Ready to discover the main tourist attractions of Vila Viçosa?
We'll start our route by visiting the Pelourinho, a marble pillar that marks the entrance of the Castle of Vila Viçosa. We'll then explore the many important monuments that characterise this fascinating area. You'll have the opportunity to admire the historic ramparts, the sanctuary dedicated to the patron saint of Portugal, the Church of Our Lady of the Conception, and the ancient Roman archaeological finds that were discovered here.
Then we'll make our way to the tomb of the writer and poet Florbela Espanca, one of the forerunners of the feminist movement in Portugal. We'll also learn about the history of other prominent local figures, such as the mathematician Bento Jesus Caraça and the painter Henrique Pousão.
We'll continue our two-and-a-half-hour walking tour visiting the Church of St John the Evangelist and the Convent of Chagas de Cristo. The final part of our tour will be spent exploring the exterior of the Paço Ducal of Vila Viçosa and the Igreja dos Agostinhos church, before walking back to the original meeting point on Avenida Duques de Bragança.
