Vila Franca do Campo Colonisers History Tour
Description
Do you want to travel through the history of the Azores? The strategic importance of these Portuguese Islands is one of their greatest treasures, and the colonists did not overlook this. At the scheduled time, we'll meet at the Vila Franca do Campo Marina and begin this tour dedicated to the colonisers.
Firstly, we'll make our way towards the Ethnography Museum, where we'll find pieces from the various archaeological digs on São Miguel. Without a doubt, a perfect location to begin learning about the oldest traditions on this island.
Afterwards, we'll head to Vila Franca do Campo's old town to see the main monuments, such as the São Miguel Arcanjo Church, the São Lázaro Church, the António da Silva Cabral Garden and the point where the D. António Prior do Crato Naval Battle is commemorated.
During the tour, we'll learn about some of the most memorable feats of the colonisers on the island, a fascinating point in the history of Portugal due to the rise of the Portuguese Empire in the Atlantic. We'll continue the tour by making our way to the Nossa Senhora da Paz hermitage, one of the most beautiful spots in Vila Franca do Campo.
Located at the highest point of a hill, its viewpoint offers one of the best panoramic views in Vila France. You'll feel like real colonists looking out at the horizon! Next stop? We'll go to a pineapple farm to learn about the importance of this product from the end of the 19th century up to now.
Before finishing up our tour, we'll shock our palates with the delicious taste of Queijadas da Vila, a typical sweet on São Miguel produced in Vila Franca do Campo. You'll love it!
Finally, after 3 hours together, we'll bring this tour to a close back at the starting point.
