Azores Marine Birdwatching Expedition
Azores Marine Birdwatching Expedition
We'll meet at 8 am at the port in Vila Franca do Campo. At the dock, located in the south of São Miguel Island, we'll enjoy a brief introduction to the birds of the Azores. Did you know that this Atlantic archipelago is home to great ornithological diversity?
After learning about the main bird species and their migratory flows, we'll set off on a zodiac tour along the coast of São Miguel. We'll sail along the south coast of the island, which is home to the largest colonies of birds. During the trip, accompanied by a naturalist guide, we'll learn to distinguish the most notable birds endemic to the Azores.
As we cruise alongside São Miguel, we'll see sandpipers, shearwaters and egrets, as well other species of native birds such as buzzards. We'll provide you with high-precision binoculars so that you can see all the details of these birds from the boat.
We'll continue the zodiac tour to Vila Franca do Campo Islet, where we'll have the opportunity to see other birds of the Azores, such as wagtails. You'll learn how to identify these small birds, which stand out for their feathers which change colour according to the season.
Finally, at 11 am we'll return to the departure pier.
Bird-watching
São Miguel and the islet of Vila Franca do Campo are some of the best places in the Azores for bird watching. However, the animals are unpredictable. The number and species of birds we see will depend on various factors such as the weather at the time, and the breeding and rearing seasons of the different species.
