Stadttempel Synagogue Tour
Stadttempel Synagogue Tour
At 10 am we'll meet in front of the Vienna Stadttempel Synagogue to begin an interesting guided tour through the interior of the city's main Jewish temple.
Do you know why Judaism is so important in the capital of Austria? Exploring the Stadttempel, also called the Seitenstettengasse Temple, we'll learn about different aspects of the life of this community, including its culture, history and traditions.
Before entering the synagogue, we'll see the Holocaust memorial and its wall of names. Then we'll enter this historic temple built between 1825 and 1826, located in the Jewish quarter of Vienna, on Seitenstettengasse. The interior is absolutely beautiful, an elliptical space topped with a classical-style dome and surrounded by a gallery with 12 Ionic columns.
The temple was built in a block of apartments and hidden from view from the street, a product of Joseph II's Edict of Tolerance, which only allowed Catholics to erect places of worship whose façades directly faced the public road.
After spending one hour getting to know all the history behind the walls of the Stadttempel, we'll say goodbye at the entrance of the synagogue.
