On our day trip from Verín, you'll explore the Portuguese town of Chaves and its surrounding areas. You'll be able to get to know its most famous monuments and the history of this town, situated in the north of Portugal.
Chaves Day Trip
At the scheduled time we'll pick you up from your hotel in Verín in a 4x4 or a jeep to cross the border with Portugal and set off for the northern town of Chaves. Our journey will only take 30 minutes.
Once there, we'll take a walk through the town to get to know its most emblematic places. We'll begin by admiring the façade of the medieval castle of Chaves, whose historic keep has been preserved. This fortress, which currently houses a military museum, dates from pre-Roman times and its construction was reinforced during the Muslim occupation.
We'll then go to the area outside the forts of São Francisco and São Neutel, defensive buildings erected in the 17th century. From here we'll walk to the Roman bridge over the Tâmega River, built by order of Trajan, the first Hispano-Roman emperor. We'll also see the column with inscriptions commemorating its construction at the end of the 1st century.
To round off our tour, we'll visit the Roman thermal baths in Chaves. Did you know that its medicinal waters are among the warmest in Europe?
Finally, after a 3-hour 30-minute tour, we'll return to Verín and take you back to your hotel.
