Venosa Private Tour
Venosa Private Tour
At your chosen time, we'll meet at the Archaeological Park of Venosa car park. We'll begin exploring this municipality in the province of Potenza, which is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
Our tour will begin in the outskirts of the town with a visit to the archaeological site of Venosa. Here, we'll see the monumental remains of the Latin colony of Venusia founded in 291 BC. We'll see the ruins of large public complexes, such as the thermal baths from the 1st century AD, and two domus from the 2nd century BC consisting of five rooms with an impluvium. This fascinating basin was a system designed to collect rainwater.
Next, we'll explore the Holy Trinity complex. This imposing religious construction consists of an ancient church and an unfinished one. As we visit the abbey, we'll observe the mark left behind by Romans, Lombards and Normans on the different constructions here, which range from the imperial domus to a Benedictine structure. We'll also view the Altavilla tombs and learn about the Palace, the Monastery and the Early Christian Baptistery.
We'll then head into the historic centre of Venosa to see the Aragonese Castle of Pirro del Balzo and cross its deep moat. If you like, we can enter this majestic fortress and explore its square plan and four cylindrical towers. You'll also be able to observe the valuable Roman artefacts from the collection of the National Archaeological Museum.
The last stop on our private tour of Venosa will be the House of Horace Flaccus, an iconic place dating back to the 2nd century BC. We'll reveal lots of fun facts about this poet, who was born in Venosa in 65 BC and lived in Lucania.
Following 2 hours of history and culture, it'll be time to say goodbye to our guide and finish the private tour of Venosa outside the House of Horace.
