Do you want to discover traditional Yucatan food? In this cooking class, we'll learn how to make delicious ancestral dishes from the pre-Colombian era in a Maya village on the outskirts of Valladolid.

Activity Details

At the scheduled time, we'll meet at X-Batun, a Maya village in Yucatan found just 10 minutes by car from Valladolid.

After being welcomed by the members of the community, we'll take part in a Maya cooking class where we'll make 5 ancestral dishes. For this, we'll use fresh ingredients, which will allow us to cook like during the pre-Colombian times

The first dish that we'll make will be tzotobichay, which is a chaya and pumpkin seed tamale. Next, we'll learn to make sikil pák, a pumpkin seed and tomato pasta. The cookery class will then continue with us making píbil kaa, a recipe which combines marinated chicken with sour oranges, achiote and spices, which is then wrapped in banana leaves and placed in an oven in the ground. Delish!

The 4th dish we'll make will be an encamisado. This recipe involves making a tortilla by hand, which is then filled with meat, vegetables and other typical ingredients. This one will really make your mouth water! To finish off, we'll make a traditional Yucatan dessert by following a Maya recipe consisting of cacao, honey, cinnamon and piloncillo.

After trying this delicious dessert, we'll bring this cooking class to an end after a total of 3 hours.
