Packrafting in the Olivia River
Packrafting in the Olivia River
At the time indicated, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Ushuaia and head to the start of the walk. Here, we'll give you a 6-kilogram (13.3 lb) bag containing all the packrafting material that we'll need later.
Once equipped, we'll start a 40-minute easy 3-kilometre (1.86 miles) trekking route. We'll cross through forests and peat bogs in Tierra del Fuego. The route ends at the shore of Mariposa Lake, where we'll inflate our packrafting boats.
Unlike conventional rafting, which involves a group raft, this new way entails individual rowing in a light inflatable boat. We'll start familiarising ourselves with this boat by rowing for an hour around the lake.
Then, we'll start packrafting down the Olivia River. The first part of this route, which will last an hour, will end at a river beach where the Esmeralda Lake stream meets the waters of the Olivia River. Here, we'll enjoy a rich lunch of a homemade meat or vegetarian sandwich, cereal bars, alfajores, fruit, and chocolates.
After lunch, we'll relax for a few minutes before starting to raft again. This next part will last an hour, and we'll explore a beautiful route around native forests and bushes on both sides of the river.
We'll end this second part of packrafting at a calm area of the river. Here, a vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Ushuaia, where we expect to arrive back at your hotel 5 hours after initial pickup.
