San Juan Chamula & Zinacantán Tour
San Juan Chamula & Zinacantán Tour
At the time indicated, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Tuxtla Gutiérrez and set off for San Juan Chamula.
In San Juan Chamula, you'll see that many of the local residents are Tzotzil people, a group that belongs to of Mayan culture. We'll visit the San Juan Bautista temple, which is an intriguing example of religious syncretism. Different celebrations, mixing rituals and prayer, are held inside the church, so be sure to pay attention to all the details.
Next, you'll visit the local cemetery, where you'll find dry leaves atop wooden crosses. This is an ancestral tradition of the local people that represents communication with the underworld.
We'll then travel to Zinacantán to visit the Church of San Sebastián Mártir and learn about the dark legends and ancestral rites that surround this place. Afterwards, we'll meet a local family that manufactures products with a backstrap loom, which we're sure you'll find fascinating. If you like, you can also try a traditional local dish in the house.
It'll then be time to return to Tuxtla Gutiérrez, where you'll be taken back to your hotel after 7 hours.
