Chan Chan Day Trip & Artisanal Fishing in Huanchaco
Chan Chan Day Trip & Artisanal Fishing in Huanchaco
At 8 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Trujillo and set off on our day trip to Chan Chan and Huanchaco, two spectacular places in northeast Peru.
Off we go! We'll head to Huanchaco, which is just 30 minutes from Trujillo. First of all, we'll visit the beach to watch the fishermen on their caballito de totora reed watercraft. This ancient custom of going out to look for fish in these vegetable fibre boats is still going strong today. You'll also be able to try this traditional fishing technique yourself!
Next, we'll leave the beach and visit the huachaques, which are totora reed farms. Here, we'll learn more about the uses and benefits of this aquatic South American plant. We'll then go to the Church of the Virgen del Socorro, a beautiful building with white and reddish tones from which we'll look out at a wonderful view of Huanchaco Bay.
Anyone peckish? We'll stop for lunch at a nearby restaurant and enjoy a two-course meal accompanied by local drink.
After lunch, we'll visit the spectacular Chan Chan citadel. This historic place is the largest mud city in the world and the biggest adobe city in the Americas.
We'll explore the pre-Columbian ruins of the Nik Ann Palace and its striking reliefs, which depict birds and fish. During our visit, we'll discover how Chan Chan has secret passages which were used by its inhabitants to escape when the Incas attacked and destroyed the city.
It'll then be time to make our way back to Trujillo, where we'll arrive at 4 pm.
