Description
We'll pick you up from your hotel in Trieste or at a central meeting point to kick off our exciting day trip into two key highlights of Slovenia: Postojna cave and Predjama castle.
First, after we cross the border, we'll reach Postojna cave, a prime tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of Europe's most famous karst monuments. As if that weren't enough, it's also the site of the world's only underground electric train.
Once at Postojna, we can see one of the most famous cave inhabitants up close: the proteus. As we navigate the cave's tunnels, passageways, and galleries, we'll pass through a beautiful drapery of stalactites and stalagmites that have been forming for thousands of years.
As we exit the cave, we'll make our way to Predjama castle, our second stop of the day. From the exterior, we'll take a moment to admire this significant fortress dating back to the 13th century. Its structure, in fact, is located in the shelter of a karst cave, specifically on a rocky wall 123 meters (400 feet) high.
Here, we can appreciate the architectural techniques used during the Middle Ages to build such solid structures, and we'll discuss the previous need for building a fortress right before a cave entrance.
At one point, the castle was a refuge to the famous Erasmus de Lueg, as its solid foundation protected against retaliation efforts. We'll share the intriguing details of this particular character and his ties to the castle during the tour.
After five hours of immersion in these two Slovenian gems, we'll bring our day to an end.
