Huichol Culture Day Trip
Description
Meet us at the Fray Junipero Serra hotel in Tepic at the scheduled time and set off towards the Aguamilpa hydroelectric dam, situated along the Grande de Santiago riverbed.
Here, our journey into the Huichol or Wixarika culture begins – one of the few civilizations successfully preserving its ancient indigenous traditions. The Huichol people possess a distinct worldview and history, which find expression in their attire, traditions, cuisine, and exquisite handicrafts.
From the Aguamilpa dam, we'll hop in a boat to Anaki, a profoundly sacred site for the Huichol community. During our visit, we'll be guided by indigenous community members, who will lead us through the ceremonial center and the Calli-Huey temple. Here, we'll have the privilege to partake in the Marakame ritual and a traditional Huichol dance. These experiences will offer a profound immersion into the very essence of this remarkable culture.
Then, we'll explore a Wixarika handicraft exhibition, allowing us to admire and appreciate genuine and authentic artisanry. To culminate this unforgettable experience, we'll enjoy a traditional lunch featuring delicious fried fish.
Finally, we'll make our way back to Tepic, after an immersive and educational 10-hour adventure, bringing us back to our starting point.
