On this day trip to Katskhi Pillar, Chiatura, and Mghvimevi monastery, we'll delve into the culture of this country and learn all about Georgia's Soviet past!

Description

At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Traveler’s Meeting Point in Tbilisi to begin our tour through the best examples of Soviet architecture in Georgia, including Katskhi Pillar, Chiatura, and Mgvimevi monastery.

Our first stop will be in Chiatura - a city famous for its extensive Soviet-era cable car network which has become a popular haunt for artists and photographers alike. As we'll learn on the tour, this town was once one of the largest manganese production centres in the Caucasus!

We'll then make our way towards Mghvimevi monastery, which is constructed into the side of a cliff! We'll climb the stairs to the entrance before we take in the wonderful stone carvings and relics housed within. On top of that, the monastery also provides a fantastic view of Chiatura!

After visiting Mgvimevi, you'll have 1 hour of free time to grab some lunch at a restaurant in Chiatura. Once we've refueled, our tour will continue to the Katshi Pillar - an elevated church to which monks climb! We'll tell you all about this limestone monolith and the Orthodox monastery which has stood atop this magnificent natural feature since it was constructed between the 6th and 8th centuries.

Of course, we couldn't leave Chiatura without riding one of its famous cable cars! We'll ride to the Pioneers Palace aboard this old means of transport while enjoying incredible views!

Finally, we'll make our way back to Tbilisi to conclude the activity after 12 hours of travel.
