David Gareja Monastery & Rainbow Mountains Private Tour

  • 3 reviews | 17 travellers
The day tour with Alex (guide) and Achico (driver) was great! We were able to enjoy the east of the country and discover a magical place thanks to the indications. From rainbow mountains, monasteries in the desert, seeing the border with Azerbaijan and ending with a magnificent wine tasting. We totally recommend the plan with Alex (tour in English) for his knowledge of the area and his involvement in adapting to us. Achico did not know English but he was a spectacular driver. Thank you!

David Gareja Monastery & Rainbow Mountains Private Tour

At the selected time, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Tbilisi and take you through the Caucasian valleys in a jeep. We'll head 100 kilometers (62 miles) southeast of Tbilisi, specifically to the Kakheti region to visit one of its most beautiful places: the monastery of David Gareja.

It's a monastery complex carved into rock founded by St. David Gareja, one of the 13 Assyrian monks who came to Georgia during the 6th century and established several convents.

The monastery is located next to the Mount Gareja desert. This means that, from this location, you can admire a beautiful view of the arid landscapes in the area. We'll visit the complex and walk around admiring its defensive walls, its towers, its ancient frescoes, and more.

We'll learn about the history of the monastery during the visit, along with many interesting facts about it. For example, did you know that the Georgian king Demetrius I had to be confined here after his abdication in 1154?

Afterward, we'll take an 8-kilometer (5 miles) hike through the Rainbow Mountains. You'll marvel at the landscapes seemingly straight out of another planet.

On the way back, we'll stop at a traditional village for lunch. Here, you'll also have the chance to sample the famous Georgian mulled wine. After ten hours of sightseeing, we'll return to Tbilisi and drop you off at your hotel.
