Ever seen the most astonishing underground tunnels in the Algarve? On this day trip to Loulé, we'll visit its famous salt mines, 230 metres (755 feet) underground. A fascinating spot in southern Portugal!
Day Trip Details
We'll pick you up at the designated time from the meeting point you select and make our way along the A-22. This motorway, one of the main roads in the Algarve, will take us to Loulé.
Once in this beautiful municipality in the south of Portugal, we'll visit its famous rock salt mine. Did you know that its geological formations are over 200 million years old? We'll descend into this underground gallery in a lift, that will take us 230 metres (755 feet) deep.
Once we reach this subterranean level, we'll spend 2 hours exploring a 1.3-kilometre tunnel. Along this route, we'll walk past various types of salt rocks. We'll also discover what extraction techniques and machines are used in this mine, which is without a doubt one of the most important ones in the Algarve.
This tour of the mine will conclude with a visit to an exhibition about Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners. We'll see sculptures, paintings, and religious works linked to the worship of this saint.
To conclude this tour, you'll receive a bottle of red wine and a jar of fleur de sel
—the best and tastiest in the world. After giving you these gifts, we'll begin our journey back to our initial starting point, where we'll say our goodbyes after a total of 3 to 4 hours.
