Tour Highlights
At the indicated time, we'll meet at Exit 1 of the MRT Longshan Temple metro station. From this point in Taiwan's capital, we'll start our tour of the Wanhua District, once the most important trading centre in northern Taipei.
We'll then drive to the Bopiliao Historical Block, one of the few places in the city that still preserves the architecture of the Qing Dynasty and is therefore part of Taipei's historical landscape.
Next stop is the Monga Dizang Temple, built by Chinese settlers in 1760 to honour Dizang Wang, patron saint of the oppressed and dying. We'll learn about the fascinating history of this revered figure and the legends surrounding him.
Nearby, we'll find Herb Alley, one of the most picturesque areas of the neighbourhood, where we'll have the opportunity to admire the architecture and learn about traditional Chinese medicine.
Next, we'll finally arrive at Longshan Temple, a Buddhist shrine that was built in the mid-18th century by Chinese settlers. Once there, we'll enter this sacred precinct, considered to be one of the best examples of Taiwanese architecture, and be fascinated by its decoration, which is even more beautiful under the moonlight.
During the tour of this Buddhist shrine, which is highly revered by the local people of Taipei, we'll also learn about the fascinating and tortuous history of the temple, which has been destroyed and rebuilt on numerous occasions. The last one took place during World War II.
Finally, after a 2 to 2.5-hour tour, we'll conclude the free tour at the temple.
