Maragua Crater Hike
Maragua Crater Hike
At 8:30 am, we'll meet you at your hotel in Sucre and leave the city behind as we head towards the village of Chataquila. We'll make our first stop of the day here to visit the chapel. This spot was where Tomás Katari, the leader of the Indigenous Peoples' guerillas, died.
From here, we'll set off on a 2-hour hike along the Inca Trail of Chataquila. Along the way, we'll observe the beautiful scenery and learn about the medicinal properties of the plants, such as muña and wira wira, that we encounter along the way.
We'll then arrive at the village of Chaunaca, where we'll hop on a bus again to go to the breathtaking Maragua Crater. When we get there, we'll travel through this thousand-year-old gap while taking in the fresh air around us.
In addition, we'll see how the locals live by visiting some houses and hearing about their way of life, which is based on agriculture and textile production. After learning about this community's beliefs, we'll take a break to have a picnic lunch.
After we've had something to eat, we'll start our return journey to Sucre. On the way, we'll pause at a viewpoint to admire a beautiful panoramic view of the Bolivian countryside. We should arrive back at your hotel at 3:30 pm.
Visiting the Niñu Mayu Dinosaur Footprints
After more? You can book the option that also includes a visit to the Niñu Mayu dinosaur footprints. After we've had lunch and made our way up to the viewpoint we'll head to this site, which is considered one of the seven wonders of Chataquila. We'll then set off on another 2-hour hike while admiring the real dinosaur footprints from the Cretaceous period. It'll then be time to return to Sucre and drop you off at your hotel at 5:30 pm.
