How did people sail around in the 17th century? Discover all on this guided tour of the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, where we'll see an old Swedish warship.
Description
At the time indicated, we'll meet at the main entrance of the Vasa Museum to start a guided tour to discover one of the most famous museums in Stockholm.
We'll start this tour by going over Sweden's maritime history in the 17th century. The Vasa ship comes from this era, a spectacular warship built between 1626 and 1628 under the order of King Gustavus Adolphus.
This wooden boat was meant to be the pride of the Swedish Armada. However, on the 10th of August 1628, the ship set off on its first voyage from the port of Stockholm and travelled only 300 metres (985 feet) before sinking. What happened? Did you know that it couldn't be recovered until the mid-20th century?
During your visit to the Vasa Museum, we'll also see maps used in the 19th century to find the location of the boat and learn about the projects that allowed it to be rescued at the end of 1961. Currently, the Vasa is the best-preserved 17th century ship in the world. We'll see all its details and learn about what life onboard would have been like at that time.
Finally, after exploring for 2 hours, we'll end this guided tour at the museum's exit.
