Birka was Sweden's first city and an important trading centre in the Middle Ages. On this tour, you'll visit its archaeological site and see the Ansgar cross!
Birka The Viking City Trip
At the scheduled time, we'll set off from the Stockholm port to enjoy a pleasant boat ride around the islands of Lake Mälaren.
After 2 hours, we'll reach the island of Björkö. On this island is the archaeological site of Birka, Sweden's oldest city. It was founded by the Vikings in the 8th century and was Scandinavia's main trading centre until the 10th century.
We'll visit this ancient Viking village and get to know the whole island. The ruins of Birka are in the middle of a stunning natural landscape where you'll be able to admire the views of Lake Mälaren and the birches on the horizon. Plus, at the top of the island, we'll come across the magnificent Ansgar cross. This monument was erected to commemorate 1,000 years since the arrival of the first missionary in Sweden.
Following the guided tour, you'll have 2 hours of free time to explore the rest of the island. We recommend a visit to the museum located among the remains of Birka's buildings, where you'll learn how the ancient Vikings lived.
You can also stroll through the hills and enjoy the island of Björkö at your leisure. Weather permitting, you can also go for a swim on a small beach and enjoy the lake water. Near the Birka site, there's a restaurant where you can grab a bite to eat.
In the afternoon, we'll make our way back to Stockholm, arriving 7.5 hours after the start of the tour.
