Dostoevsky Tour
Dostoevsky Tour
"While other great writers fall into oblivion, dragged down by the mysterious undertow of the times, Dostoyevsky remains at the very top." These words were used by philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset to describe the talent of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, one of the greatest writers in world literature.
Crime and Punishment is this author's masterpiece, as well as one of the most influential novels ever written in Russian literature. The plot is set in 19th century St. Petersburg, like many of Dostoyevsky's novels.
This tour will start from Sadovaya Street to visit some of the places that inspired the writer to create this literary gem. Specifically, we'll visit the places where the student Raskolnikov, the protagonist of Crime and Punishment, walked thinking about his miseries.
We'll visit Sennaya Square or Peace Square and the canals of St. Petersburg, which appear repeatedly in the book. We'll also admire Sonia's house, Raskolnikov's beloved who'll accompany him to Siberia, and the home of his moneylender, the elderly Ivanova, where a key event in the book takes place.
The tour of Dostoyevsky's St. Petersburg will take us to Stolyarniy Avenue, where Raskolnikov's house is located. This is a place that in the 19th century was inhabited by humble people and today is known for its lively atmosphere and taverns.
To end the tour on a high note, we'll enter one of Stolyarniy's taverns to feel like one of Dostoyevsky's characters. Here we'll bid farewell after two hours of sightseeing.
