Private Day Trip from Sofia
You can choose between two options to enjoy a private day trip from Sofia. If you want to travel to the Ancient Roman Empire, then you should select Plovdiv. But if you prefer churches and monasteries, then Rila and Boyana is the ideal choice.
Plovdiv Day Trip (8 hours)
At 9 am we'll meet at the St. Alexandar Nevski Cathedral and head southeast to Plovdiv. During the 2-hour journey, we'll learn more about Europe's oldest city.
Upon arrival in the Bulgarian historic city, our first stop we'll be the Traciana fort ruins which are over thirty centuries old. The fort, built in the 8th century BC, is the country's oldest and best conserved.
The private tour will continue on to Plovdiv's old town, where we'll admire the picturesque Renaissance houses and the many churches. We'll finish in the Dzhumaya mosque, one of the oldest Ottoman buildings in the Balkans.
Our next stop will be the city's Ancient Roman Empire ruins, the main square contains the stadium, the forum and the theatre. The impressive remnants of Plovdiv's past will leave you in awe. To finish, we'll visit the Bachkovo monastery, the second largest in Bulgaria. Inside you'll find the beautiful icon of the Virgin Mary.
The day will end by heading back to Sofia, arriving at 5 pm.
Rila and Boyana Day Trip (7 hours)
We'll meet at 9 am at St. Alexandar Nevski Cathedral and be driven in a private vehicle to Rila, two hours away from the Bulgarian capital. During the journey, the guide will explain the historical importance of the location you're about to discover.
Our first stop on the private tour will be the Rila monastery. The famous monastic complex was founded in the 10th century by Saint Ivan of Rila, the first Bulgarian hermit, whose tomb became an important pilgrimage site for the village from the Middle Ages.
As we go past the different rooms and patios around the Rila monastery you'll learn about the damages from the 19th-century fire. Afterwards, we'll go to a restaurant around the Rila river to enjoy a delicious lunch (not included).
We'll go back to the car and head to Boyana, where we'll visit the famous Boyana church, considered to be the greatest artistic representation in Bulgaria. It's also the country's first monument to be named UNESCO World Heritage Site.
After admiring the pictures inside the Boyana church, we'll return to Sofia arriving at 4 pm.
