Communist Sofia Tour
After meeting up at 4 pm in front of the Court House in the heart of Sofia city centre, we'll begin our walking tour of the Bulgarian capital's communist past.
First, we'll go back to the end of the Second World War. Our expert English-speaking guide will tell us all about the birth and evolution of the Bulgarian Communist Party and the importance of two historic figures: Stalin and Churchill.
As we walk around Sofia, we'll admire some of the most emblematic buildings built during the Communist era while our guide reveals all about the secret police and the different tactics used by the state to control the population. We'll learn what life was like under Communism in Bulgaria, from what kind of health system there was, to whether there was gender equality to how the historic period affects residents today.
We'll make a stop by the old Royal Palace, which now houses the National Art Gallery, before continuing our walking tour to one of the most controversial places in the city: the Monument to the Soviet Army. The memorial has used as a place of protest and vandalised with political messages a number of times.
Our tour will come to an end at around 7 pm in front of the monument dedicated to victims of Communism.
