Palace of Monserrate Ticket
With this ticket, you can visit the exotic Palace of Monserrate and its spectacular English landscape-style garden, considered one of the most beautiful in Portugal.
The Palace of Monserrat was built in the 19th century over the hermitage of Nossa Senhora de Monserrate. It was the English nobleman Francis Cook who fell in love with the landscape of Sintra and decided to build a palace combining Gothic, Oriental and Mozarabic elements. The result was this unique building surrounded by nature, which made Cook become the center of the social life of the 19th century for both the Portuguese and English aristocracy.
Famous British writers and poets such as Lord Byron (most of whom were part of the Romantic movement) came to visit these beautiful gardens and enjoy the summer parties hosted here. Did you know that Byron even mentions Monserrate in his poem Childe Harold's Pilgrimage?
The Park and Palace of Monserrate still receive visitors from all over the world, who come to explore its winding paths, lakes, and waterfalls and to see the over 3,000 species of exotic plants here, such as camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons, and even bamboos from Japan.
