Minneriya National Park is a national park and wildlife sanctuary in northern Sri Lanka, a hotspot for wildlife and photography enthusiasts.

History

Minneriya is located in the north-central province of Sri Lanka. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1938 and designated a National Park in 1997, to further protect its rich biodiversity.

Asian Elephant Sanctuary

Minneriya is renowned for its large population of Asian elephants. During the dry season (June to September) is when you're most likely to see these friendly creatures, moving in herds of 250+.

The reserve is also home to sambar deer, leopards, sloths and a wide variety of birds, reptiles and amphibians.
