Day Trip to Palaces of La Granja & Riofrío

  • 18 reviews | 83 travellers
A visit worth seeing. Riofrío is a great unknown that is worth knowing. The guide is betting on making it known and it is a success. The farm is also beautiful, especially the gardens but to see them you have to dedicate the whole day. We have done the tour with a great tourist guide. She has transmitted her passion for Segovia and answered a thousand and one questions. I would repeat another excursion if it were with the same guide.

Day Trip Details

At the designated time, we'll meet in Plaza del Azoguejo. From this spot located at the foot of the Segovia Aqueduct, we'll head south.

After a 30-minute journey through a beautiful forest landscape, we'll reach the Royal Palace of Riofrío. This beautiful Rococo-style building dates back to the first half of the 18th century when it was ordered to be built by Philip V, the first Spanish monarch from the House of Bourbon.

This luxurious mansion is surrounded by more than 600 hectares of forest, which allowed the monarch to practice montería, a traditional driven hunting technique in Spain, one of their favorite pastimes. We'll learn how they carried out this activity by visiting the Museo de la Caza (Hunting Museum), located inside the palace. You'll also explore its main rooms and chambers, where you'll see furniture and decorative arts of the era.

After visiting Riofrío, we'll head to the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso. Once we arrive, you'll have between 30 to 45 minutes of free time to stroll through its gardens and grab some lunch. We recommend bringing your own picnic, although the area also has bars and restaurants. After lunch, we'll go on a guided tour of this architectural gem, often considered as "the Spanish Versailles."

We'll explore the palace's main rooms, where we'll admire the notable ornamentation from the 18th and 19th centuries. You'll also visit the Real Colegiate (Royal Collegiate Church), where Philip V of Spain and his wife, Elizabeth Farnese, are buried. We'll conclude the tour by marveling at the fountains of La Granja's gardens, including the Fountain of Neptune, the Fountain of Fame, and the Baths of Diana

After this guided tour of the Royal Palace of La Granja, we'll return to the meeting point in Segovia, where this 5.5-hour day trip will come to an end.
