Sarajevo Walking Tour
Sarajevo Walking Tour
We'll meet at Zelenih Beretki 30 at the indicated time, and then we'll begin our guided walking tour through the old town of the centuries-old capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, now a symbol of the Balkan War from the 1990s.
Throughout our guided tour of Sarajevo, we'll learn about city's storied history, which was an Ottoman stronghold in the 15th century. We'll hear about its role in the First World War, as the place where Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated.
We'll also visit the Mejdan Park, a green space in the city by the Miljacka River. We'll admire the impressive architecture of its buildings, including the Emperor's Mosque by Gazi Husrev Bey, the temples of various religions: synagogues, mosques and Catholic and Orthodox churches such as the Franciscan Church of St. Anthony, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Serbian Orthodox Church and the ancient Jewish Temple. In fact, on this walk you will be struck by the mixture of calls to prayer from the different places of worship. We'll quickly see why Sarajevo is known as the “Jerusalem of Europe”!
From here, we'll see the oldest brewery of the Ottoman Empire, an inn of that era, and streets known for their traditional cuisine such as Bravadžiluk and Kazandžiluk
Next up, we'll pass by several iconic Sarajevo houses such as the Bicakcic-Hadzisabanovic and Spite, buildings that showcase the architectural beauty of the city. Continuing along Kovaçi Street, we'll see the cemetery built in honor of the Bosnian defenders of the war that ended in 1995.
As we continue on, we'll also visit the Baščaršija, the old bazaar and heart of the city, which was also built during the Ottoman rule. There we'll browse through the various stalls and pick up a souvenir. The route will take us through Bravadžiluk and Kazandžiluk streets, full of typical Bosnian culinary offerings. We'll also visit the lively Markale market, full of local culture and flavours.
After passing other highlights such as the Sebilg Fountain or the Eternal Flame, we'll finish the tour around 2 hours later at the meeting point.
