Tunnel of Hope Tour
Tunnel of Hope Tour
We'll meet at 2 pm at Zelenih Beretki 30, and then we'll head towards one of the most impressive places in the capital.
On the way there we'll stop briefly at the Markale market, where one of the biggest massacres took place during the siege of Sarajevo. We'll also pass by Sniper's Avenue, which was one of the most dangerous places in the whole city during the war as any passer-by could be shot if he passed by.
Next, we'll arrive at the entrance of the Sarajevo Tunnel, also known as the Tunnel of Hope, which was built in 1993 to escape from the city during the Bosnian War.
Entering this underground passage, located five metres below the Sarajevo airport runway, we'll learn first-hand about the strategy followed by all those who crossed it. Did you know that escapees had to wear masks while they were down here due to the lack of ventilation?
The Tunnel of Hope connected the neighbourhoods of Dobrinja, located inside the Serb siege lines, and Butmir, on the outside. And all in a space only 800 metres long, yet for the more than 3,000 people who crossed it every day, it meant freedom and a new life. The tour will end at 4 pm when we return to the meeting point.
