Liberdade Tour + Museum of Japanese Immigration
Liberdade Tour + Museum of Japanese Immigration
We'll meet at 11:30 am at Praça da Liberdade to start this tour through the eastern district of Sao Paulo: Liberdade.
In the same square, we'll begin by learning about the history of this particular neighborhood, which from its beginnings became the center of Asian culture in this Brazilian city. We'll walk through the surrounding streets until we reach the Capela de Santa Cruz and the nearby Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos, two temples full of history.
The next stop will be at the Lohan Temple, located in a 19th-century home. While admiring its exterior, we'll discuss its relevance, as it is one of the nerve centers of Chinese culture in Sao Paulo. What did Chinese immigration mean for the city? What was its influence? We'll tell you all about it during the tour!
Next, we'll visit the Museum of Japanese Immigration in Brazil. We'll explore its exhibition and learn all about Brazil's Japanese community. Did you know that Liberdade is considered the world's largest Japanese community outside of Japan?
Leaving the museum behind, we'll head next to the Jardim Oriental and Largo da Pólvora park. We'll finish the tour by taking you to the Liberdade restaurant area so you can taste the most traditional Asian dishes on your own - the icing on the cake!
The tour will conclude at around 2:30 pm.
