Sao Paulo Jewish History Private Tour

We'll meet at your hotel at your chosen time to start this tour of Sao Paulo and its Jewish culture. We'll learn about the legacy of the Jewish community, which arrived in Brazil more than 400 years ago fleeing the Inquisition.

Our first stop will be the Bom Retiro neighbourhood, where the Jews established their first settlement in the city. Here we'll take a panoramic tour including a  visit to the Kehilat Israel Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in Sao Paulo, where we'll see the map of Israel and many religious symbols on its outer wall. 

Inside the temple is the Jewish Immigration Memorial, which houses curious objects, photos and documents about Jewish culture. Next, we'll go to Higienópolis, the centre of the Paulista Jewish community since the 1920s. From this decade onwards, 11 synagogues, kosher restaurants and schools were also built in this neighbourhood that we'll see during the tour. 

One of the last stops on our tour will be at the Unibes cultural centre (Israeli Brazilian Union for Social Welfare), a modern building designed by architect Roberto Loeb. When we arrive, you'll soon see which Hebrew religious symbol gave Loeb the inspiration for this building.

To conclude this tour of Sao Paulo's Jewish history, we'll visit the Jewish Museum. This museum is the country's largest institution dedicated to Jewish history. We'll head inside the museum and learn about the importance of this religion for Brazilians. In addition, we'll learn about the different waves of Jewish migration to Brazil throughout history.
