Akrotiri Archeological Site Tickets
Why Visit Akrotiri?
In the south of the island of Santorini, you'll find one of the most important prehistoric settlements in Europe and also one of the best-designed archeological sites. Akrotiri. This ancient city was inhabited before the volcanic eruption in Santorini around the year 1600 B.C.
Due to these events, Akrotiri is also known as the "Minoan Pompeii," as the city was discovered almost intact and covered by ash in 1866, although the archeological excavations didn't begin until 1967. Since then, the findings have been impressive, ranging from decorative elements and tools to buildings.
In fact, some buildings reached up to three floors with a design that gives you an idea of how the public spaces were divided in this ancient city. During your tour of Akrotiri, you'll also see some characteristic sanctuaries from the Minoan civilization and very elaborate frescoes. You'll surely be amazed!
