Flea Market Walking Tour
Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet up at the Franklin metro station, to begin this tour of the Flea Market and its surrounding area.
In the vicinity of the slaughterhouse, we'll see the "conventillos" (tenements) and hear all about how they work. In the 1970s, the prosperity of the slaughterhouse came to an end with its move to another sector of Santiago de Chile. During the walking tour, we'll visit the old facilities which today is a lively market for fish, vegetables, meat, and many other fresh products. This is a genuine treat for your senses!
After visiting the Franklin Slaughterhouse Market, we'll head to the Huemul I neighbourhood and its neighbours Huemul II and Huemul III, three residential areas of working-class origin. We'll stop in front of two striking buildings: the Huemul Theatre and the Caja de Ahorros Bank. This last building was built at the beginning of the 20th century with the best materials and still exudes the elegance and splendour of that era!
Strolling around the Huemul neighbourhood we'll find several "galpones", street stalls selling everything including antiques, furniture, and technology. We'll also take the opportunity to talk about the haunted sanatorium in the area, which conceals a terrifying legend.
To finish the walking tour, we'll go to Vítor Jara Park, where we'll briefly explain the legacy of this author in Chilean folklore before bidding farewell after two and a half hours of touring this fabulous area.
