Aracataca Day Trip
Aracataca Day Trip
"Because even though I couldn't love him, I couldn't live without him". Quotes like this are why Gabriel García Márquez's novel One Hundred Years of Solitude is in the 20th-century literary canon. We'll pick you up from your hotel in Santa Marta at 8 am and then travel to the inspiration for this landmark novel.
After a 90 minute drive, we'll arrive in Aracataca. García Márquez, who also won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982, was inspired by his birthplace to create Macondo. This fictional town is where a large part of One Hundred Years of Solitude takes place, and it also represents a literary universe of its own within the narrative of magical realism.
We'll begin our tour of Aracataca, or Macondo, by visiting Telegrapher's House. This spot houses several copies of García Márquez's work and has been declared a World Heritage Site. We'll also visit the author's birthplace and San José Church, the parish where he was baptised.
While we learn some interesting facts about the life and work of García Márquez, we'll visit other places in Aracataca related to the author. These include the school where he studied and the Remedios the Beauty Municipal Library.
At the end of our tour, we'll return to your hotel in Santa Marta where we expect to arrive at around 4 pm.
