Sanlucar de Barrameda Walking Tour Itinerary

At 11 am your guided walking tour of Sanlucar's historic centre will begin, departing from the Avenida Calzada de la Duquesa Isabel, which leads from the heart of the city down to the beach.

As you stroll down this popular avenue, you'll also talk a walk through the history of the town, which dates back to ancient times. Arriving at Plaza del Cabildo, you'll see a monument dedicated to the first ever circumnavigation of the Earth. Hear all about this mythical voyage, which departed from Sanlucar de Barrameda and succeeded in sailing around the globe. This square divides the Barrio Bajo, or Lower District, from the Barrio Alto, the Upper District, into which the route will continue.

Wandering through the historic Plaza de San Roque and along Calle Bretones, characterised by their typical Andalusian whitewashed houses, you'll reach the Covaches de Sanlucar. These Gothic archways, formerly the entrance to an ancient marketplace, are covered in intricate stone carvings of mythical sea creatures. What are they? Why are they there? All will be revealed on your tour as you walk up Bethlehem Hill to the Auditorio de la Merced. A former church, this Mannerist-style building now houses a theatre. Admiring its impressive façade, you'll discover the history of the Medina Sidonia family who ordered its construction back in the 17th century.

Next, you'll reach Plaza de la Paz, home to magnificent examples of Renaissance and Medieval architecture including the Church of Nuestra Señora de la O and the Palace of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia. Take a well-deserved rest next, visiting a typical Sanlucar bodega where you'll enjoy a tasting of a glass of Manzanilla, the local sherry.

At the end of your route, the crumbling stone walls of the Castle of Santiago will be waiting. Admire the imposing defensive walls and towers of the Medieval fortress as your guide explains the myths and legends that surround it. The tour will then come to an end around 1 pm.
