Alcatraz is one of the most famous prisons in the world and a must-see when in San Francisco. Situated in the middle of San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz was an uninhabited island until it was converted into a fort in 1860
Opened between 1934 and 1963 as a maximum security prison, its corridors have held prisoners considered to be highly dangerous. Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud aka “The Birdman of Alcatraz”, Mickey Cohen, and Rafael Cancel Miranda have inhabited these cells in years past.
Visiting Alcatraz means taking a ferry at Pier 33 that will take you directly to The Rock in just 20 minutes. Once there, you can learn about the history of this prison and, of course, the numerous escape attempts made by the prisoners. Did any prisoner manage to escape? You will find out!
Also, during your visit to Alcatraz, you will see firsthand what it was like to be in the corridors of this prison, you can enter the cells, visit the dining rooms or the courtyard and discover what life was like in prison thanks to the audio guide included during your visit.

San Francisco Bay Cruise
Another must-do in San Francisco is a boat ride on the bay. Departing from Pier 39, you’ll spend an hour cruising past some of the city’s top attractions.
The boat will head towards the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, offering views of Fort Mason, the Marina District, Crissy Field, and the Presidio Hills. After passing beneath the Golden Gate, you'll continue past the Marin Headlands, Sausalito, and Angel Island State Park.
The journey concludes with a loop around Alcatraz Island before returning to the starting point, where you can admire the stunning San Francisco skyline.
