Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was a maximum security prison located on Alcatraz Island, 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) off of the coast of San Francisco. 

History

Alcatraz Prison operated as a maximum security federal prison from 1934 to 1963. During those years, it housed some of America's most notorious criminals, including Al Capone.

The famous escape from Alcatraz
