Dakar & Goree Island Private Tour

  • 14 reviews | 172 travellers
A highly recommended visit. Our guide Fay (I don't know if I've written your name correctly, Fay; if not, I apologize) was very serious, responsible and kind. The island is very beautiful and it is shocking to learn the details of such a degrading activity as human trafficking. I warn you that the amounts to be paid there (municipal taxes, ferry and entrance to the slave house) must be done in Senegalese francs, so you must bring exchanged currency, and you must also bring your passports.

Dakar & Goree Island PrivateTour

At the scheduled time, we will collect you from your hotel in Saly and head to the north of Senegal. After traveling for around an hour and a half, we will reach Dakar, the country's magnificent capital city.

Our first stop is at the port, where a ferry will take us across to the island of Goree, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Here we will learn about how the island was an important port in the Atlantic slave trade between the 16th and 19th centuries.

We will explore the island and discover important historic locations as well as modern-day memorials to those troubled past times. We will visit the House of Slaves with a striking pink facade hiding some darker secrets inside. You will learn all about the terrifying period of history during which this building operated as a prison and market place for African slaves.

Later we will explore the island's narrow streets, admiring the beautiful colonial houses. We will make a stop at a local restaurant where you will have your own time to try some delicious traditional food (not included).

After you have regained your strength, we will return to the ferry and sail back to Dakar. In the capital, we will take a fantastic walking tour around all the essential sights. Our first stop is Independence Square, the beating heart of the city's historic center. The buildings surrounding it are a perfect testimony to the opulent era of the 1940s and 1950s.

We will also see the elegant Presidential Palace before heading to the bustling markets of Kermel and Sandaga, and the artisan stalls of Soumbedioune. You will also encounter one of the principal monuments of Dakar, the African Renaissance Monument, the largest sculpture on the continent. You will hear about how and why this statue has fiercely divided opinion.

In the last part of the trip, we will visit the neighborhood of Medina, home to the magnificent Grand Mosque, and the colorful market of Tilene where you fill find Shamans selling charms and amulets.

We return to Saly at around 6 pm where we drop you back at your hotel.
