Pelourinho African Culture Tour

  • 15 reviews | 120 travellers
The tour was wonderful. Adilson knows his history and held our attention throughout. We learned a lot and he showed us things we would not have been able to discover on our own. His love for Salvador shines through and made the tour that much more special. A highlight of our time here. Top marks! Thank you, Adilson!

Salvador de Bahia African Culture Tour

We'll meet at 2 pm in front of the Cathedral Basilica of San Salvador and begin a walking tour to learn about the influence and legacy of African culture in Salvador de Bahia, specifically in the Pelourinho neighborhood.

First, we'll go to Terreiro de Jesus, where we'll learn the history of the colonization of this area of Brazil through the actions of the Jesuit Missions and the Portuguese colonization. We'll also learn about some African celebrities who have worked in Salvador de Bahia throughout history.

We'll continue walking through the center to the Cross of Sao Francisco. Here we'll tell you about the birth in the 19th century of a men's organisation whose aim was to help the black community of Salvador in the struggle for their liberation. We'll also learn about other key part of African culture such as the samba and capoeira dances. The rhythms are sure to get you wanting to move your feet!

Finally, we'll visit the Escola do Olodum, a cultural and educational center of African descent where we'll review the importance of Carnival in the city.

After three hours of sightseeing, we'll end the guided tour at the Cross of San Francisco.
