On this day trip to Quilombo Kaonge, we'll delve into the historical and cultural roots of this Afro-Brazilian community. As well as that, we'll taste typical products from the northeast of Brazil.
Description
At the indicated time, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Salvador to begin this day trip to the Quilombo Kaonge community in the Recôncavo Baiano region. Get ready for an immersion in the richness of Afro-Brazilian culture!
First of all, we'll head to the town of Santo Amaro, located 111 kilometres (68.9 miles) from the Bahian capital. In this charming municipality, we'll stroll through streets filled with majestic century-old mansions and the bustling market while immersing ourselves in the historical roots of the region.
Afterwards, we'll visit the Parish Church of Our Lady of Purification and the Igreja dos Humildes church, which in 1817 was a female education centre set up to house and teach orphaned girls and widows.
Our next stop will be at Quilombo Kaonge, where we'll learn about the daily life of this community of descendants of 19th-century slaves from a griot, as the mediators are known.
We'll also take part in a cooking workshop, where we'll learn how to produce palm oil, manioc flour and herbal syrup, 3 of the most typical products of north-eastern Brazil. To top it all off, we'll enjoy a traditional Quilombola lunch consisting of chicken, fish moqueca, rice, pirão, caruru and vatapá - a delight!
Finally, we'll say goodbye at the starting point 7 hours after the beginning of the activity.
