Rovaniemi Free Walking Tour
Tour Details
Our journey will begin at Lordi's Square, where we'll meet at the indicated time. Get ready to dive into the rich history and culture of Rovaniemi!
From ancient settlements to modern wonders, throughout this tour, we'll gain new insights into what makes this city truly unique as we hear intriguing stories and learn about Rovaniemi's culture and history.
Our first stop is Sampokeskus, a central shopping hub, where we'll step inside to warm up and begin uncovering the history of Rovaniemi. From here, we'll continue past the Arctic Light Hotel, housed in a 1950s building that once served as the City Hall before being transformed into this luxury hotel.
Next, we'll head to the Lumberjack's Candle Bridge, a symbol of the city, with its unique design paying homage to the area's lumberjack heritage. This modern bridge over the Kemijoki River is as functional as it is eye-catching. Speaking of the Kemijoki River, we'll follow its banks to see Kemijoki Oy, Finland's leading producer of hydropower. We'll learn about its significance to the local economy and the environmental role it plays.
As we stroll through Rovaniemi, we'll also stop by the Angry Birds Playground, a fun nod to Finnish innovation, and take in the towering Mother Lapland Statue, a 7-metre-high (22.9-ft) tribute to the region, standing proudly since 1989.
Our route will then take us past key landmarks in the city centre like Rovaniemi City Hall, the City Library, Rovaniemi Theatre, and the Korundi House of Culture. The latter is home to both the Rovaniemi Art Museum and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, offering a fascinating insight into Lapland's creative spirit.
Lastly, we'll pass the Revontuli Shopping Centre and arrive at Arktikum, Rovaniemi's renowned museum and science centre. Here, we'll gain a deeper understanding of the Arctic environment and the indigenous Sámi people.
Finally, after a total of 2 hours, we'll end our tour at this spot, leaving you full of ideas for how to enjoy the rest of your time in Rovaniemi.
