Don River Walking Tour
Don River Walking Tour
We'll meet at 1:30 pm by the Mother and Child sculpture on Bol'shaya Sadovaya Ulitsa. From this central location, we'll head to the banks of the Don River, the great driver of Rostov-on-Don's growth and the namesake of this Russian city.
Walking along Bol'shaya Sadovaya street, we'll talk about the importance of this river as the first population center in the area. Greeks, Genoese and Turks built cities along the Don River, laying the foundations of the current city of Rostov.
Next, we'll cross Pokrovsky Park and Theater Square, known for the large sculpture that stands in its center. This is the Monument to the Liberators of Rostov, a large obelisk loaded with symbolism that has become an icon of the city.
During the tour along the shoreline of the Don, we'll also admire sculptures related to the history of the river, such as Grigory and Aksinya in a boat resting on one bank. We'll also be able to see the Monument to Empress of Russia Elizaveta Petrovna, the founder of Rostov-on-Don. We'll tell you all about her story during the tour!
After covering the origins of the city, we'll tell curious anecdotes about the Don River, one of the ten longest rivers in Europe. Finally, at 3:30 pm, we'll say goodbye so that you can continue exploring the area at your leisure.
