Rome Underground Tour
A City Under the City
While aboveground, Rome boasts hundreds of cultural activities, but this archeological tour invites you to uncover Rome's lesser-known and darker side underground. Historically, an underground system used to help build the city; we'll discover all its hidden treasures on this comprehensive tour.
Meet us at the designated time at Largo dei Colli Albani, number 15 as we set off into the underground darkness of the Appian Way and Caffarella to witness a hidden side of the Eternal City.
Considered one of Rome's largest underground systems, this labyrinth hidden below the Italian capital extends from the Aurelian Roman Wall to Via dell’Almone. As we explore the historic quarry, once used for extracting construction materials, we'll gain profound insight into the foundational elements that shaped the construction of Rome. Indeed, the city was not built in a day.
From here, we'll move on to a site once used for ancient mushroom cultivation, setting the stage for the tour's main event: the catacombs of Rome. Roaming through this captivating historical space, we'll reveal how this space has been repurposed over time.
Our journey continues with a visit to the recently reconstructed Mithraeum, the worship area beneath the Appian Way. This site is intricately linked to the cult of Mithras, the god of the sun.
Coming back up to street level, we'll end the tour on a high note. We'll enjoy a wine tasting, in true Marcus Gavius Apicius style, who was a first-century Roman gastronomist.
After 2 hours of archeological exploration, we'll bring the activity to an end.
